Itinerary
Your Arctic holiday begins at London Heathrow, meeting the Tour Manager ahead of our group's flight to Oslo. In the Norwegian capital, we transfer to a flight to Tromsø. Situated in the Arctic Circle, Tromsø stands on its own forest-covered island and is known as the 'polar capital of Norway'. At this time of the year, the attractive city is characterised by its polar nights, where the sun only briefly breaks over the horizon.
Our hotel for the next two nights overlooks the harbour - which remains ice-free year-round due to the warming Gulf Stream. For the rest of the afternoon, you are free to explore the picturesque old streets lined with quaint wooden buildings or you may like to visit one of the city's many museums, such as the Troll Museum or the North Norwegian Art Museum. This evening, we gather back at the hotel for our first dinner together.

The Ofoten Railway lies on a headland at the foot of the Fagernesfjellet, between the Beisfjord and Rornbaksfjord, and runs between the iron-ore mines at Kiruna in Swedish Lapland and the port town of Narvik on the Norwegian coast. The modern town of Narvik was developed as a port for the export of the iron-ore, and the Ofoten Railway, was built at the turn of the century as the link between the mines and the port.

Spending a night in London before your tour can make such a difference to the first day of your holiday - you can arrive in the capital in good time, relaxed and ready to join your Tour Manager the next morning. You may even want to take in a show on the West End or dine in one of London's famous restaurants. Perhaps on your return to London, you would like to break your journey with an overnight stay before continuing home.
We can book a wide range of hotels in central London or, for our holidays beginning with a flight, at Heathrow, Gatwick, or Manchester Airport for the night before or after your holiday. If you require a quote for single occupancy at any of the hotels, please contact us on 01904 734 805.
Buying tickets for UK train services can be a tricky business - there are so many fares to choose from, each with different rules and restrictions. As you are connecting with an international departure, we strongly recommend that you book a fully flexible ticket to ensure that should the departure times for your holiday change, your rail ticket can allow for these changes.
We can book fully-flexible UK rail tickets from your local station to join your holiday whether this be a European holiday from St Pancras or a UK holiday. The prices are competitive and tickets are not restricted to a particular train or time of day, and in most cases offer you a free choice of routes.
For an up to date quote from your local station, please ask one of our Tour Advisors.

This was a magical holiday in the Arctic Circle. Having done some of the activities before, we were still attracted by the prospect of seeing the Northern Lights, travelling on the Arctic train, and dog sledding. All of these lived up to expectations, with 2 nights of Northern Lights. I also could spend many more holidays involving reindeer, even though we didn’t get a sleigh ride this time. The train was a fabulous trip over to Sweden, with a few stops to have a leg stretch and walks in the snow, and of course photograph the spectacular scenery. However, from the holiday description, I was under the impression we were booked on the actual Arctic train, which I gather is more touristy, and has a bit more information. Being on the normal service train didn’t detract from the experience, and we had been given some history by our excellent tour guide. The Ice Hotel was an unexpectedly pleasant morning excursion, followed by the dog sled trip, made even more special by seeing the very young puppies. Our trip was enhanced even more by our excellent tour guide Elizabeth Greaves, who deserves praise for going beyond the call of duty to make the trip so special. The other person who went out of his way to ensure we had a special trip was our Estonian coach driver Simo. Nothing was too much trouble for him.. The only slight problem was the meal in the hotel in Narvic. It was another occasion where groups weren’t treated very well, and the dining room was inadequate for the numbers staying in the hotel. The other hotels were absolutely fine, with lovely meals and very helpful staff. I would suggest that the walk into the new town of Kiruna takes about an hour, rather than the advertised 15 minutes, which is the length of time taken to reach the nearest facilities, including Sami street food served in a tent. If you are used to a warm winter holiday, try the snow for a change. It’s like being in a fairytale.
